Public Meeting: Citizens Against Terror

Dear Friends,

India has been wracked by an unrelenting and ugly carnival of violence throughout 2008. There was hardly a month when innocent citizens have not been targeted either by mob terror or bomb terror in one part of the country or another.

The cities of Bangalore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat, Delhi, Thane, Malegaon, Modasa have all been targeted with bomb blasts. Despite evidence to the contrary surfacing in recent years, it was widely assumed until a few months ago that Muslim extremist groups were responsible for all acts of terror across the country. But with the investigations of the ATS, Maharashtra in the Thane and Malegaon blasts being made public it is now evident that certain Hindu extremist groups too have taken to terrorist activities.  Nanded Blasts of 20026 and 2007 had already pointed in this direction but central investigating agencies attempted to successfully subvert the investigations in the Nanded cases.

On the other hand, mobs went on the rampage attacking Christians and their places of worship in Orissa, Karnataka and other states. In Orissa, the orgy of violence went on for weeks, raising a serious question of whether something called the Rule of Law existed in that state.

Given this backdrop of violence and gore, Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), Communalism Combat and Muslims for Secular Democracy (MSD) supported by Students Organisations and representatives from city colleges and organisations like The Bombay Catholic Sabha and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) have decided to organise a public meeting in Mumbai to mobilise Citizens against Terror and Violence. A number of colleges have already been contacted and student representatives have indicated their keenness to participate.

Venue: K. C. College           Date: December 4, 2008       Time: 6.00-8.00 p.m.

We invite your organisation to join us as co-organisers of the public meeting and help in the mobilisation of citizens.
