The Bombay Catholic Sabha commemorated this year’s Martyrs Day in a unique way. On 30th January 2008, the 60th anniversary of the assassination of the Father of the Nation, as many as 1500 members of the Catholic community gathered on the streets around O L of Salvation Church, Dadar with lighted candles, posters and banners, to Protest against the atrocities against Christians in Orissa, Chattisgarh and other parts of our nation, while also praying for the martyrs of these attacks.

The Candle Light vigil began at 6.30 p.m. with Bishop Bosco lighting the first candle and dedicating this demonstration of solidarity to our suffering brothers and sisters who were affected by the attacks on them ever since Christmas Day 2007. Prayers and singing of hymns by the many who had lined the busy road, drew the attention of those driving up and down and many curious passers-by, thus conveying our message of concern for this continuing atrocities on minorities.

While thanking the priests, nuns and lay people that gathered at such short notice, the President of BCS, Mr. Dolphy D’Souza, urged them to continue their prayers and conscientise those in their parishes and neighbourhoods. He also asked them to be ready to carry this movement forward and join in larger numbers for programs and rallies that will be announced shortly.
