Dear friends,

This is to inform all that a seminar has been organised to brain-storm on the proposed draft CMZ (Coastal Management Zone) notification put forth by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. At this seminar every Sectin and Clause would be scrutinised by us all and some experts and environmentally-concious Lawyers to decide on it's suitability and if needed to decide on our views on the same.

Cursorily going through the draft, it appears that many glaring loopholes have been deliberately / inadvertantly left in this draft (which supposedly would replace the present CRZ Rules) so that the construction industry could exploit it thouroughly and bypass the rules.

This sounds the death knell for whatever mangroves, wetlands, astuaries, beaches etc. are left in Mumbai and our country.

I am attaching the proposed draft with this mail. Kindly go through it and, if possible, come prepared with your suggestions / opinion / objections etc. so that our final opinion could be crystallised and collectively / individually be sent to the MoEF. The last date for giving our feedback is 30.6.2008, so we have very less time.

Venue :-- Maharashtra Nature Park (Mahim - Dharavi). 10 mins walk from Sion Rly Station)

Day, Date and Time :-- Sunday, 1st June.2008, 3 pm - 6 pm.

Do spread the word to all activists, greens and concerned citizens and do attend as this may be the last chance we would get to salvage our fast-deteriorating coasts.
